"Green Hornet" Team Earns Environmental Excellence Award

February 25, 2008

LYNN, Mass. -- The F/A-18E/F and EA-18G "Green Hornet" Team was selected by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) as a recipient of the Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition Award for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. F/A-18E/F and EA-18G aircraft are powered by twin F414 engines, and innovative improvements at GE-Lynn contributed significantly to this award.

GE Aviation and Global Research Center (GRC) were recognized for contributions in development of jet noise reduction technologies including a fluidic nozzle and mechanical chevron nozzle, low emissions Trapped Vortex Combustor (TVC) and significant reductions in manufacturing hazardous waste.

GE Aviation and GRC recently demonstrated a 2.5 dB reduction over much of the noise spectrum during F404 ground engine tests at Lakehurst Naval Air Station with the chevron nozzle. The GE team also realized an impressive 40% reduction in nitrogen oxides during rig tests of the TVC. These results lay the groundwork for continued development of these important environmentally friendly technologies.

"We are continuously exploring materials and methodologies that will enhance the quality, durability, survivability and environmental performance of our F414 engines," said Joe Bussichella, GE F414 Engine Systems Leader. "We are committed to working with our industry partners to ensure the Super Hornet and Growler excel on all fronts."

Twenty-seven winners were selected in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2007 CNO Environmental Awards competition. The annual CNO Environmental Awards program recognizes Navy people, ships and installations for their exceptional environmental stewardship. The Green Hornet team was acknowledged in the Weapon System Acquisition category. Other categories included: Natural Resources Conservation, Cultural Resources Management, Environmental Quality, Pollution Prevention and Environmental Restoration.

Rear Admiral Larry Rice, Director of the CNO Environmental Readiness Division, congratulated the winners. "This annual competition recognizes Navy's environmental superstars, and I congratulate all of the winners. Your environmental stewardship is an integral part of our Navy's operations and is critical in preserving our ability to ensure our operating forces are trained and ready to perform their missions. Bravo Zulu," he said.

The CNO award winners will be honored June 3, 2008 in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center.
