LM6000 Packaged by European Gas Turbines to be Used by British Sugar or Combined-Cycle Cogeneration Plant

May 09, 1997

First Uprated, DLE and Dual-Fuel...

EVENDALE, OH - One GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine-generator set has been sold by European Gas Turbines' (EGT) Gas Turbine Group Limited, Lincoln, England, for use at a combined-cycle cogeneration facility to be built by British Sugar plc, Peterborough, England. The unit will be the first uprated LM6000 to employ GE Marine & Industrial Engines' (M&I) Dry Low Emissions (DLE) combustion system with completely dry dual-fuel capabilities.

The LM6000 will be used at British Sugar's Wissington beet sugar factory in eastern England, the largest beet sugar processing unit in Europe. The LM6000 will be capable of operation on natural gas and distillate fuels, and is expected during dry operations to achieve NOx emissions of 25 ppmv and 60 ppmv, respectively. The nominal electrical output of the uprated LM6000 will be 40.7 megawatts on natural gas and 40.3 megawatts on distillate fuel.

The factory has a steam requirement for processing throughout the year with a peak demand during the months of September through February. Electricity produced at the facility will be sold to United Kingdom electricity suppliers.

M&I announced the uprated LM6000 in December 1995, and the first production units will be delivered in mid-1997. The primary change from the current design is an improved low-pressure turbine. The uprated LM6000 will provide increased output of approximately 5% to 20% (depending on the configuration and ambient temperature), a simple-cycle thermal efficiency in excess of 42% and dual-fuel DLE combustion capabilities.

The uprated LM6000 for the British Sugar project will be manufactured at M&I's Evendale, OH, facility, and will be shipped to EGT by December 1997. EGT will package the unit at its Lincoln facility. Commercial start-up is slated for July 1998.

EGT is a member of M&I's Original Equipment Manufacturer network. Including the British Sugar unit, EGT has sold and packaged nine LM6000s for various power generation applications in the United Kingdom.

GE M&I is part of GE Aircraft Engines and is headquartered in Evendale. M&I is the world's largest designer, developer and manufacturer of aeroderivative gas turbines for a variety of power generation, gas compression and commercial and military marine propulsion applications.
