GE Delivers First F404 Engine For Malaysia F/A-18s

May 20, 1996

Lynn, Massachusetts - In ceremonies today at GE Aircraft Engines' (GEAE) Lynn plant, the Malaysian government took delivery of its first F404-GE-402 engine for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's new fleet of McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18D fighter aircraft.

By the end of this year, GEAE will deliver to Malaysia 18 F404 engines valued at more than $40 million to power 8 F/A-18 aircraft.

Rated at 17,700 pounds thrust, the F404-GE-402 is the latest F404 model for the F/A-18. It incorporates new technologies developed in conjunction with GEAE's F414 engine, the powerplant for the U.S. Navy's F/A-18E/F fleet. These new technologies include monocrystal turbine blades, and a more durable, lightweight composite outer duct. The F404 is produced in GEAE's Lynn facility.

The 3,300 F404 engines delivered worldwide in the past 15 years have accumulated more than 5.8 million flight hours. In addition to Malaysia, the F404 also powers F/A-18 aircraft for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Canada, Australia, Spain, Kuwait, Finland, and Switzerland.
