The Dubai Airshow has grown from a small, civilian trade show in 1986 into one of the largest aviation events in the world with more than 1,200 exhibitors from 140+ countries. November’s 2021 version was the first major airshow since the COVID-19 pandemic and detailed in many ways just how the commercial aviation industry is starting to recover. Here’s an overview of some of GE Aviation headlines from the show.
Showstopper: The Boeing 777X debut
It took Boeing eight years to develop its newest widebody passenger jet, the GE9X-powered 777X, but just 15 hours to fly it from Seattle to the United Arab Emirates, where the plane made its public debut at the Dubai Airshow on Sunday. First impressions? “Magnificent 777X is out to impress,” one frontpage headline declared. “X-pectant,” said another.

Advancing technologies to reduce CO2 emissions
From new jet engine cleaning technologies to help restore performance to agreements to test 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel on wide-body power plants, GE Aviation and customers announced several efforts to cut CO2 emissions from the GE-powered fleet in service.
This included GE commitments with Emirates on a test flight program using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Etihad Airways signing a sustainability agreement to test new technologies.

GE’s 360 Foam Wash program reaching 1,000 washes of fielded engines since 2017. It is an alternative to the water wash method, restoring engine performance leading to reductions in fuel consumption.
Deals at the show
More than $78 billion worth of commercial and defense contracts were signed during the show. GE Aviation and CFM International, a 50-50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines, got in on the signings, including a $4.5 billion deal with Akasa Air.

Other signings included:
Low-cost carrier flyadeal signed a seven-year TrueChoice™ Overhaul agreement to cover CFM56-5B engines that power its 11 A320-200 aircraft fleet.
Salam Air and CFM International finalized an engine maintenance agreement coupled with the acquisition of spare engines.
Durability
At the show, GE announced that it’s GE9X engine for the Boeing 777X had completed a series of dust ingestion test at GE Aviation’s test site in Peebles, Ohio. GE Aviation engineers injected a stream of fine dust debris straight into a demonstration engine to simulate some of the world’s toughest flying conditions – like those in the Middle East. Earlier this year, GE did the same type of testing for its GEnx engine which powers the Boeing 747 and 787.
