GE Soars to New Heights with New Facility at Brisbane Airport

GE is thrilled to announce the launch of its new, $8 million Asia-Pacific Service Centre, reflecting years of successful service and hopes for an even brighter future in flight. The world-leading facility will be the largest GE Aerospace, Systems service centre in the Asia-Pacific region.
Since 2005, GE Aerospace has operated out of the Brisbane Airport in Australia to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services to clients across the Asia Pacific region.
GE Aerospace opened the new facility in a ceremony on September 6, 2022. Queensland Assistant Minister to the Premier Bart Mellish MP officially opened the facility in a ceremony at Brisbane Airport.
The expansion aims to grow the company’s presence in the region and support more customers. Meeting the MRO needs of a global customer base may be a challenge, but GE is committed to building a world that works.
GE Australia Country Leader Sam Maresh said, “A key part of GE Aerospace’s global customer services network, this world-class facility offers cutting-edge technology and highly skilled technicians at a one-stop shop for aviation customers from across the Asia-Pacific region. We are delighted to mark a new chapter in our Australian operations and our nearly two-decade relationship with Brisbane Airport with the opening of a leading aviation servicing facility that creates fresh opportunities for GE Aerospace.”
The new service centre supports various avionics, flight management, electrical power and propeller systems on the Boeing 737 and 787, Q400 and F-50 regional aircraft and propellers on the RAAF’s fleet of C-130J and C-27J. Over the last year, GE has worked hand-in-hand with Australian commercial and industrial building firm, Tomkins, to construct the new facility. The new workplace spans over 3,000 square meters and is located in the airport’s Da Vinci Precinct, directly across from the Qantas Flight Training Centre.
“I was thrilled to take part in the opening of the new, larger facility in Brisbane,” said Ali Backx, Systems commercial leader for GE Aerospace. “It will provide vital MRO and Services support to our key customers in the ASIA-Pacific region for our Dowty Propellers and Avionics product portfolio.”
The new facility will employ more than 80 people and is set to boost the local economy and airport growth. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she looks forward to seeing the airport’s contribution to the state.
“I welcome the expansion of GE Aerospace’s new facility in Brisbane, building on aviation services based at Brisbane Airport servicing the Asia-Pacific region. GE’s increased investment is an investment in Queensland’s future and is a signal to young people in particular that good jobs are available in a range of industries.”
“We have hosted students from Queensland schools since 2007, and we look forward to hosting more students in our new, expanded facility – giving students greater opportunities for hands-on experience in servicing components from Australia, Asia, and Europe,” said Andrew Howard, Brisbane site leader for GE Aerospace.
“It is truly a global facility. It’s a skills factory and we hope one day the students of Aviation High will find a place in the aviation workforce, in these facilities and others throughout the airport. This is an investment in skills capability in the sector and it’s an investment in Queensland and Australia,” said Sam Maresh, County Leader, GE Australia.
The new facility comes as part of Brisbane Airport’s Stage Two of its Airport Industrial Park, and airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said he looks forward to a new era of growth through this partnership.
